Rights Leadership Course

The aim of this training is to:

  • teach about rights and responsibilities
  • develop self-advocacy skills
  • help recognise and stand up for their rights

The Rights Leadership Course can be run with groups who come together as consumers of a service (employment, recreation, and training) or can be provided for a group of individuals.

Content:

  • rights and responsibilities
  • service user rights
  • rights at work
  • discrimination
  • dealing with police
  • voting
  • consumer rights

Format:

  • designed for groups of 6-8
  • 2 hour sessions
  • run over a period of six weeks
  • follow up session 8 weeks later
  • alternative formats can be considered

Rights for All video

This course also includes the viewing of the video, Rights for All.

Rights for All video is about:

  • rights at home
  • rights at work
  • rights over a person's body

Dealing with Cops and Court

This training is for people with intellectual disability who have been, or who are at risk of, coming into contact with police or the courts.

The aim is to teach people skills and develop confidence to:

  • identify their disability to police or court officers
  • ask for assistance when they come into contact with police or have to go to court

Content:

  • role of police
  • what to do if you get arrested
  • how to get a support person
  • do you have to go to court?
  • what to do if you are a victim or witness a crime?

Format:

  • 2 hour sessions
  • can be tailored to suit the group
