Training for Volunteer Support Workers

CJSN Court Support Volunteer Training

This training is for people who wish to volunteer to provide court support and court related procedures

The aim of this training is to:

  • provide skills and knowledge necessary to support people at court
  • develop confidence to support people going through the criminal justice system

Content:

  • introduction to intellectual disability
  • NSW court processes
  • supporting a client at court
  • working with solicitors
  • communication tips
  • court etiquette
  • visit to a Local Court
  • volunteer roles and responsibilities

Format:

  • compulsory two day course
  • course material and refreshments are provided
  • facilitated by IDRS staff including Educators, CJSN Regional Coordinators and Solicitors

CJSN Support at Police Stations Volunteer Training

This training is for current CJSN Court Support Volunteers or people with extensive experience in either the disability or criminal justice fields.

The aim of this training is to:

  • provide skills and knowledge necessary to support people at police stations
  • develop confidence to support people going through the criminal justice system

Content:

  • the NSW police arrest and custody process
  • rights of people in police custody and rights of vulnerable persons including people with intellectual disability
  • role of support person
  • supporting a client in an interview
  • supporting a client who is a victim or witness
  • taking care of yourself in this role

Format:

  • compulsory two day course
  • course material and refreshments are provided
  • includes a visit to a police station custody area
  • facilitated by IDRS staff including Educators and CJSN Regional Coordinator
