This practical one day workshop is designed to assist disability workers to understand and respond to some of the main legal issues which confront people with intellectual disability:

  • consumer rip offs
  • guardianship
  • money management
  • discrimination
  • fines
  • apprehended violence orders
  • pitfalls of the internet

Workshop will

  • raise your awareness about particular legal issues that affect people with intellectual disability
  • discuss challenges you may face when supporting clients with legal matters
  • explain the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disability
  • highlight kay issues about guardianship and financial management orders for people with intellectual disability
  • discuss legal issues relating to relationships for people with intellectual disability
  • explain the law around inheritance and wills for people with intellectual disability
  • provide an overview of other common legal pitfalls such as internet crime
  • provide information about where and how to get assistance with legal problems
  • Resources you can use with people you support

Note: This course does not deal with crime in any detail. Our Cops and Courts training focuses on working with defendants and victims in criminal matters.
